Lo and behold, there was a beautiful, black, with a bit of a rainbow tint,
I should have taken a picture.
Instead, I chased the bird out of the window.

That is so cool!
If it were me I'd probably have run for the camera, scaring the poor thing and causing him to dash wildly around the house for the next hour, unable to collect his wits and find his way out and pooping all over my living room!
Can you send him over to me next time he pops in to cheer you up? They're doing major roadworks through the night near our house. Literally, sounds like a war.

How cool! Your chirping visitor was a tzufit eretz yisraelit -- the Palestine sunbird, in English (probably named before the state was established).

I love birds when they are outside, but inside birds scare me. They're unpredictable and there's not always an easy way to get them to leave.
I was once in a hotel dining room by Yam Hamelach, and I came back from the buffet to find a bird eating my dessert. It's a family joke now, but it still gives me the shivers.
Inside- people and animals we have trained or contained. Outside- other living things...
Robin -- I really wanted to get my camera! Unfortunatley, my camera was in a cabinet in between the bird and the window. I was afraid that I would scare the bird and he would fly even further into my home... and poop all over the place.
Tafka PP -- Such a little bird can't compete with bulldozers!
Toby -- yeah, it was definitely cool. It would have been cooler if I wasn't afraid of him pooping in my home.

Staying Afloat -- I actually tried waving my arms to get it to fly out the window, but the stupid bird just kept flying up into the ceiling. Finally, I got a broom... and the bird flew out the window.
I love those birds -- even though they can be quite aggressive at times -- and found out what they were. I keep trying to get a good photo of them, but it's nearly impossible to do it without a strong zoom lens.
Rahel -- too bad I did not know. It was right there in front of me; less than 2 meters away.

We had a bird (not that kind) in our place when we were in Israel for the Bar Mitzvah. I had to force him out the window--I didn't see him fly away; I'm thinking the balcony might have been a better way to let him go on his own terms.
Oops.
Dave -- I am not sure you can call our autonomous rule during the times of the first or second Temple a "state."
The idea of a nation state is really from modern times (from the French Englightenment).
