I took my family to see a local production of the Sound of Music tonight.
It was wonderful!
I love the music! And the performance was excellent (especially considering that it was amateur theater).
I must admit that, when I was a kid, I was not nearly as offended as I am today over the boy telling the girl "You need someone older and wiser telling you what to do...."
Please daven (or send happy, healing thoughts) for RivkA bat Teirtzel.
With love and optimism,
RivkA

Maybe that could be blamed on our alma mater?
I always thought that song was a brilliant way to deliver the theme of the whole plot!
When Rolf sings it, it seems like a cute overstatement of his own maturity, a seventeen year old's chest banging, imitating his understanding of a traditional love relationship based on having an autocratic and controlling father.
It's cute in the way that a two year old wearing his father's shoes or a fourteen year old claiming that he needs to shave his "mustache" is.
It seems like harmless braggadocio.
Until we realize, later, that he becomes a tool for the fascists.
The second time through, knowing what he'll become, that song isn't sweet anymore. It gives the chills the way the word "Anschluss" does.
this line always bothered me, which is why i was glad when my daughter noticed too and pointed out that she things it is he (rolf) who is scared and confused.
this makes the song sort of farcical - like he is trying to cover up his own immaturity and uncomfortableness with girls by putting it on her. she's quite amused by the song, and sings along as if it is rolf who is saying it about himself, and that really, leisl will take care of him. (if you watch the movie, it works - could be that leisl is perfectly aware of this and is playing along just to please him.)
along the same lines, the line 'and you belong to him' when talking about marriage in the later song is disturbing too. again, daughter noticed and said 'that's weird. that's not true' which opened up a whole discussion.
yes, we are a little obsessed with the play/movie/music around our house :-)
chanie
tikunolam -- that's a chicken vs. the egg question: Does it bother me because I went to Barnard or did I choose Barnard because things like that bother me?
juggling frogs & chanie -- interesting comments. there is certainly what to think about. I'd be curious to discuss it further (not necessarily on the blog)
